Woman's death in Turku police cell prompts investigation

A woman around the age of 50 died in a detention cell at the Turku police station Monday evening after efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

Finnish police reported Tuesday that a woman around the age of 50 died while in detention at the Turku police station on Monday evening. Police said that the log shows that the woman was brought to the facility at 9:15 pm on Monday evening.

About one hour later, a guard on routine rounds noticed that the woman was unresponsive. Guards then began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation. They continued CPR until rescue services arrived, but the woman was pronounced dead.

The Central Finland Police Department is conducting an investigation into the case and cause of death.
