Saturday afternoon a passenger car and a lorry collided on a motorway near Oulu in northwest Finland, killing all three occupants of the car, police report.

Authorities had originally reported that just two adults in their thirties had died in the crash, but the third victim, the school-age child, was found in the backseat after the vehicle was dismantled. They believe that all three of the deceased were killed instantly in the impact of the crash.

Police say the victims have been identified as Russian citizens, and that the Russian authorities have been informed accordingly.

The accident took place sometime before 3 pm on motorway four, between Haukiväylä road and Kiiminkijoki bridge. The family's car was approaching from the south, and the side of the car struck the truck travelling in the opposite direction head-on.

Police are not sure why the car had ended up in the opposite lane. The surface of the road at the time was slushy and slippery, but the authorities say that an inspection of the car's winter tyres revealed that they were in good condition.

The driver of the lorry was not seriously injured in the incident.
