Record-Breaking Snow Depth Predicted in Helsinki

Helsinki is already covered by seventy centimetres of snow - and the snow still keeps on falling. This should make for Helsinki's snowiest December, surpassing the record set in 1915, the Finnish Meteorological Institute says.

The additional seven centimetres of snow falling on Monday night brought the depth of snow covering Helsinki to record levels for the month of December.

The depth of snow is already equal to that of the record-setting year 1915. Since the snow still keeps on falling, the Finnish Meteorological Institute predicts that the record will be broken at latest today during the day. Winds blowing from sea areas are expected to increase snow depth by a further five centimetres.

Driving conditions in the province of Uusimaa remain bad as the result.
