Chancellor of Justice to Leave Office

Finland's Chancellor of Justice Paavo Nikula has announced his resignation from the beginning of July. Nikula has been on sick leave from the end of January following a stroke.

His duties have been carried out by the Deputy Chancellor of Justice Jaakko Jonkka. Nikula will leave office at the end of June following a final decision to be made by President Tarja Halonen on Friday.

The Chancellor of Justice and the Parliamentary Ombudsman are both the highest legal supervisory officials in the country. The Chancellor of Justice ensures that officials perform their duties in accordance with the law. He also keeps an eye on the implementation of both basic and human rights.
