Statistics Finland said that about 3,000 foreign subsidiaries operated in Finland in 2012. Altogether, they employed 234,000 workers.

These foreign subsidiaries employed about 15 percent of the total workforce in the country – a proportion that has remained more or less constant over the past five years.

European companies accounted for 80 percent of the staff on the payroll of foreign subsidiaries, with Swedish-owned companies commanding the lion’s share. Following on the heels of the Swedes were American, German and British companies operating locally.

Last year these subsidiaries made a total turnover of 75 million euros, once more the majority of it coming from Swedish offshoots.

Most foreign subsidiaries operated in the wholesale and retail trade, as well as in vehicle and motorcycle repair.
