More Detentions in Football Match-Fixing Probe

The investigation into alleged match-fixing in Finnish football took another step forward on Tuesday.

First the tabloid Ilta-Sanomat reported that the police detained four foreign Rovaniemen Palloseura (RoPS) players at a RoPS training session in Rovaniemi, capital of Finnish Lapland.

A short time later, the National Bureau of Investigation announced that they had taken into custody a total of six people in different parts of Finland.

The arrests are in addition to the previous detentions of two men in Lapland. The first of those is a Singaporean who has been convicted of match-fixing in Singapore. His arrest when trying to leave the country on a false passport at the end of February triggered the current investigation.

The commercial TV channel Nelonen is reporting that the investigation is looking into suspicions of fixing in around ten games last season.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Singaporean man is suspected of making payments to footballers in Finland in an effort to influence the results of matches.

The police are to provide more information on the matter on Friday.
