Tampere's Cityscape May Get Major Facelift

Tampere’s city centre could undergo a major transformation in the coming years. World-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind’s design of the city’s new Deck and Central Arena has been revealed. The plan includes a multifunctional arena and five towers.

In addition, businesses, hotels and residential buildings are planned for the area spanning around 60,000 square metres. The new arena is to be built above the existing railroad track.

If the blueprint becomes reality, it could change the cityscape significantly. NCC Property Development, which is responsible for the project, has described the plan as architecturally fantastic.

If the plan is approved, the arena could be completed in time for the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2013.

The City of Tampere has given preliminary approval to pay for infrastructure costs. Funders of the project include ice hockey clubs and businessmen.
