An American collector paid 348,000 euros for the silver torch, according to the online service of the newspaper Le Parisien. Before the bidding, the torch was valued at 200,000 euros.

Helsinki Olympic torches are highly sought after by collectors, since only 22 of them were created.

That is in sharp contrast with, for example the 3840 torches made for the 1936 Berlin Olympics or the 16,000 produced for the 2004 Athens Games.
