Many campaign goodies not made in Finland

Almost all the products offered by presidential candidates to support their campaigns have been produced abroad, according to the SAK trade union federation.

Paavo Väyrynen, the veteran Centre party politician who has founded his career on euroscepticism and support for rural Finland, is selling a 30 euro mug featuring a portrait with his wife. More than 50 of the mugs have been sold, according to Väyrynen’s campaign website. Buyers may be surprised to learn that the mug was produced in Asia, although the Väyrynens’ picture was imprinted in Finland.

Cosmopolitan National Coalition party candidate Sauli Niinistö’s products include a latte mug made in China, rollerblade pins made in the Far East, T-shirts from Poland and jewellery from Italy.

Populist Finns party candidate Timo Soini is meanwhile offering a ‘loyalty card’ ordered from Asia, although his campaign pins were mostly produced in Finland.

Social Democrat candidate Paavo Lipponen is using scarves and ice-scrapers manufactured in Germany to support his campaign. His badges were produced by different factories, both in Finland and elsewhere in Europe.

The Swedish People's party’s Eva Biaudet has branded chocolate from Germany, while football fan and Left Alliance candidate Paavo Arhinmäki is using badges made in England to earn money for his presidential campaign.
