Racist vandalism hits election posters

Stickers with racist messages have been pasted onto election posters in the town of Mikkeli, eastern Finland.

A picture of one candidate with immigrant roots was torn off one of the boards.

The stickers targeted posters regardless of what party they belonged to, but at least the local branches of the Christian Democrats and the Greens are planning to file police reports.

“We encountered the same kind of vandalism in the last election, except no such stickers were used then. This kind of racism must be eradicated,” said Pekka Sippo, the chairman of the Mikkeli Christian Democrats.

The Greens echo this sentiment.

“I noticed at once on Friday that these stickers had appeared. All parties should file a joint police report,” said Veli Liikanen, the chair of the local organisation for the Green League. “This would be in the interests of all local residents.”

Liikanen says that the stickers have been appearing around Mikkeli for months.
