Skiing legend Eero Mäntyranta dead at 76

One of Finland’s all-time most successful competitive skiers, Eero Mäntyranta, died Monday in Oulu at the age of 76.

During his active career in the 1960s, Mäntyranta won seven Olympic medals including three gold. He also won five World Championships medals, among them two individual championships in the 30 kilometre event.

In his later years, Mäntyranta lived as a reindeer herder in Pello in Finnish Lapland. He was also a keen reindeer racing enthusiast.
