The ring leader, who was also convicted of tobacco sales crimes and weapons crimes, faces a three-year jail term. One accomplice was sentenced to two years behind bars and the third culprit given a six month suspended jail sentence.

They will also have to pay thousands of euros in compensation to the Customs Board, as well as court costs.

The three, comprising a man born in 1954 and two of his close relatives, bought alcohol and tobacco in Estonia and sold it in Finland to large numbers of under-age children. Police estimate that they made nearly fifty trips to Estonia to buy alcohol over a period of years, importing thousands of litres of alcohol.

Their operation was discovered after a father followed them when they sold alcohol to his son.
